Honey mustard dipping sauce

Recipe v Dozer v

This is a lovely dipping sauce that’s creamy, a bit tangy, a bit sweet and takes barely a minute to make. Particularly great with crunchy crumbed chicken tenders, popcorn chicken, nuggets and fish fingers, though I also use it for veggie sticks and spoon it over simple pan-fried chicken or fish.

Honey mustard dipping sauce

One of my most used dipping sauces

I use this Honey Mustard dipping sauce a lot because it’s extremely quick to mix up at the last minute and it goes with “everything”. I’ve crammed the ingredients in the notes section of more recipes than I can count. I finally realised it’d be much neater and easier to everyone (myself included!) if I just wrote out the recipe in a separate post.

So here it is! My honey mustard dipping sauce. Universally loved because it’s sweet enough for the kids, balanced enough with tang for the grown ups, and creamy enough to make even veggie sticks delicious.

What goes in Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce

Here’s all you need to make it. Just mix them up!

Honey mustard dipping sauce
  • Mayonnaise – Use whole egg mayonnaise or kewpie which have a smoother flavour, less sweet and less tangy than regular mayonnaise.

Substitute with yogurt for a lower fat version.

  • Dijon mustard – I love dijon mustard for the smooth well rounded flavour. It is not as sharp as yellow mustard, though if you want a brighter yellow colour then you can use some yellow mustard instead.

  • Vinegar or lemon juice – For a touch of tang to balance out the flavour (else it’s too sweet and too rich), and also to thin the sauce out a bit to make it suitable for dipping and spooning.

  • Honey – The “honey” part in this sauce! 🙂

  • Salt and pepper – Just a pinch of each. I like to use finely ground black pepper so you can barely see it.

What to use Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce for

As a dipping sauce

I particularly love using it as a dipping sauce for crunchy crumbed and battered things because crumbing = sauce clinging = good. Here are some top hitters:

  • Chicken fingers – like Crunchy Crumbed Chicken Tenders and KFC Chicken Fingers

  • Popcorn chicken – Just like the honey mustard dipping sauce offered at KFC!

  • Fish fingers – and they’re baked!

  • Battered fish

  • Schnitzel – Whether chicken, pork of beef

As a sauce

It’s also loose enough to use a sauce so you can spoon it over things cooked relatively plainly to make them a whole lot more interesting. Some ideas:

  • Protein – Pan fry or grill a simple piece of protein with just a little salt and pepper, then serve it with Honey Mustard Sauce spoon over it. Great with chicken, pork, turkey and seafood (fish, prawns/shrimp). I’m not convinced how well it pairs with beef and lamb, but I could easily be swayed!

  • Vegetables – Transform a pile of plain steamed vegetables (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, peas, beans, anything!) by drizzling it with Honey Mustard Sauce. You could also use it as a dipping for roasted vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower immediately spring to mind).

A creamy dipping sauce with just the right notes of sweet and tang, universally great for "everything!". Use it as a dipping sauce – think crunchy chicken tenders, fish fingers, popcorn chicken, wedges, fries and even roasted broccoli, steamed beans or veggie sticks. Or spoon it over a chicken, fish or pork pan fried with just a little salt and pepper.
Substitute the mayonnaise with yogurt for a lower fat version. For a brighter yellow colour, use 50/50 dijon and American yellow mustard.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise , preferably whole egg (Note 1)
  • 2 tbsp dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 – 2 tsp apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt and white pepper (sub black)
Prevent screen from sleeping

Instructions

  • Mix the ingredients together, starting with 1 teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice, then adding the other if you want it a bit tangier. Ready to use!

Recipe Notes:

1. Whole egg mayonnaise (the label will specify as such) is creamier, smoother and more balanced than regular mayonnaise which is typically sharper and/or sweeter.
Keeps for 2 – 3 weeks in the fridge.
